How do port numbers enable multiple simultaneous communications?

Each conversation is tracked by a unique source/destination port pair; the client picks a dynamic source port and targets a well-known destination port, and the response simply swaps them, so many conversations stay separate.

Port Numbers for Multiple Conversations:

TCP and UDP use port numbers to manage multiple simultaneous conversations.

Port Number Basics:

  • 16 bits = 2^16 = 65,536 possible port numbers (0-65535)
  • Each conversation uses a unique source/destination port pair

Source vs Destination Port:

Port Type Purpose Assignment
Source Port Identifies originating application Dynamically generated by client
Destination Port Identifies requested service Well-known port for the service

Example:

HTTP Request:    Source: 49152  →  Destination: 80
HTTP Response:   Source: 80     →  Destination: 49152

Key insight: The source port in the request becomes the destination port in the response.
