How do you log in to a Cisco WLC and what does the Network Summary dashboard show?
Log in via web browser using credentials set during initial setup. The Network Summary shows: number of configured WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks), associated APs (Access Points), active clients, and detected rogue APs — giving a quick health overview of the wireless infrastructure.
Logging in to the WLC (Wireless LAN Controller):
- Open a web browser and navigate to the WLC's management IP (Internet Protocol) address
- Enter the credentials configured during initial setup
- The WLC GUI (Graphical User Interface) is similar to a wireless router's GUI but with far more capabilities
Network Summary dashboard displays:
| Information | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| WLANs | Number and names of configured wireless networks |
| Access Points | Number of APs joined to the controller |
| Clients | Number of currently connected wireless clients |
| Rogue APs | Number of detected unauthorized access points |
| Operating system | WLC firmware version and system uptime |
Basic vs Advanced views:
- The WLC starts with a Monitoring dashboard showing high-level network health
- Click Advanced (upper right) to access the full configuration interface
- The advanced Summary page gives access to all WLC features: WLANs, Controller, Security, Management, Wireless, etc.
Tip: The rogue AP counter is a critical security indicator — if it's non-zero, investigate immediately. A rogue AP on the corporate network is a serious security vulnerability.
