How does human misbehavior contribute to security incidents?

Human misbehavior — through negligence, indifference, ignorance, or gullibility — is one of the most common causes of security breaches.

The four categories:

Behavior Description Example
Negligence Careless handling of information Leaving a laptop unlocked, weak passwords
Indifference Not caring about security policies Ignoring security warnings, bypassing controls
Ignorance Not knowing the risks or rules Clicking phishing links because you don't know better
Gullibility Being too trusting Giving credentials to a social engineer on the phone

Classic example: Bob Quick, former head of UK counter-terrorism, was photographed carrying classified documents in plain view while entering 10 Downing Street. The documents were legible in press photos, compromising an active anti-terror operation.

Tip: Security awareness training targets all four of these — but indifference is the hardest to fix because it's an attitude problem, not a knowledge gap.
