How does human misbehavior contribute to security incidents?
Human misbehavior — through negligence, indifference, ignorance, or gullibility — is one of the most common causes of security breaches.
The four categories:
| Behavior | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Negligence | Careless handling of information | Leaving a laptop unlocked, weak passwords |
| Indifference | Not caring about security policies | Ignoring security warnings, bypassing controls |
| Ignorance | Not knowing the risks or rules | Clicking phishing links because you don't know better |
| Gullibility | Being too trusting | Giving credentials to a social engineer on the phone |
Classic example: Bob Quick, former head of UK counter-terrorism, was photographed carrying classified documents in plain view while entering 10 Downing Street. The documents were legible in press photos, compromising an active anti-terror operation.
Tip: Security awareness training targets all four of these — but indifference is the hardest to fix because it's an attitude problem, not a knowledge gap.
