The number e ≈ 2.718281828 has a famous repeating quirk. How does the peg method capture it?

2718281828 → 27 18 28 18 28 → nuke, dove, knife, dove, knife — the "1828" repeat becomes a repeated dove-knife image.

The story: by a glowing e, a mushroom-cloud nuke erupts as a dove holding a knife flies past — then a twin dove with a knife appears (the "1828" repeats).

Panel 1 — the letter e, a mushroom-cloud nuke, and a dove holding a knife. Pegs nuke (27), dove (18), knife (28).

Panel 2 — a second identical dove holding a knife. Pegs dove (18), knife (28).

Euler's number starts 2.7 then repeats 1828 1828. In pegs that's 27 · 18 · 28 · 18 · 28:

  • 27 = nuke, 18 = dove, 28 = knife, then 18 = dove, 28 = knife again.

Story: a nuke with a dove holding a knife… and again a dove with a knife. The built-in repetition is a memory gift — you only have to remember "dove-knife, twice." This is why 2.718281828 is one of the easiest irrational constants to hold.
