GSM steht fuer Global System for Mobile Communications und ist der dominante 2G-Mobilfunkstandard.

Historisch stand die Abkuerzung fuer Groupe Special Mobile. GSM brachte digitale Mobiltelefonie, SIM-basierte Teilnehmeridentitaet, Roaming, SMS und eine Architektur mit BSS, MSC, HLR/VLR und AUC. Es ist die Grundlage vieler spaeterer Mobilfunkkonzepte.
