What are the three international organizations that influence WLAN standards, and what role does each play?

ITU regulates the radio spectrum, IEEE defines the technical 802.11 standards, and the Wi-Fi Alliance certifies interoperability between vendors.

Organization Role Key Contribution
ITU (International Telecommunication Union) Regulates the allocation of radio spectrum and satellite orbits globally Decides which frequencies can be used for Wi-Fi in each country
IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Specifies how radio frequencies are modulated to carry information Develops the 802.11 standard family (a, b, g, n, ac, ax)
Wi-Fi Alliance Vendor association promoting interoperability and growth of WLANs Certifies that products from different manufacturers work together; creates the "Wi-Fi" brand and names (Wi-Fi 4, 5, 6)

Why all three matter:

  • Without ITU: Countries would use conflicting frequency allocations
  • Without IEEE: No technical standard — devices from different vendors couldn't communicate
  • Without Wi-Fi Alliance: Standards exist on paper but no guarantee they work in practice across brands

Tip: The Wi-Fi Alliance is NOT a standards body — they test and certify that products conform to IEEE 802.11 standards. The "Wi-Fi CERTIFIED" logo means a device has passed interoperability testing.
