What characterizes the line organization structure, and where is it suitable?
The oldest form — vertical authority flowing top-to-bottom in a straight line, with strict unity of command; simple, fast, but unspecialized.
Also known as scalar, military, or vertical organization. Two variants: pure line and departmental line organization.
Characteristics:
- Authority and instructions flow vertically, top to bottom
- Unity of command maintained in a straight line
- Persons at the same level are independent of each other
- Responsibility and authority are specified for every position
Merits: simplicity, discipline, prompt decisions, orderly communication, easy & economical supervision. Demerits: lack of specialization, absence of conceptual thinking, autocratic approach, coordination problems.
Suitability: small-scale organizations with few subordinates — beyond that, the generalist managers and long paths become bottlenecks.
