What concrete, practical steps can individuals take to reduce their OSINT exposure?

Four key protection strategies: conscious information sharing, metadata reduction, identity compartmentalization, and regular self-OSINT audits.

1. Conscious information sharing. Before every post, ask yourself: what could a motivated investigator learn from this? A birthday announcement reveals your date of birth. A photo of your new apartment might show the street name. A complaint about your commute reveals where you work and when you travel.

2. Metadata reduction. Use tools like ExifTool and MAT2 to strip metadata from photos and documents before sharing them. A single photo with GPS coordinates embedded in its EXIF data can pinpoint your home, workplace, or favorite restaurant. Remove that data before it reaches the internet.

3. Identity compartmentalization. Maintain separate digital identities for different contexts. Use different usernames, email addresses, and profile pictures for professional, personal, and anonymous activities. This breaks the chain that OSINT analysts use to link accounts across platforms.

4. Regular self-OSINT audits. Periodically search for yourself using the same tools and techniques an attacker would use. Google your name, search your usernames, check what EXIF data your photos contain. You can't fix what you don't know about.

Additional measures:

  • Review and tighten privacy settings on all platforms regularly.
  • Use privacy-focused search engines for sensitive queries.
  • Consider professional OSINT assessment services if you're in a high-risk role.
