What do the four key Vedic sutras mean, and which trick is each?
They're short slogans naming shortcuts you've already used in this module.
| Sutra | Literal meaning | The trick |
|---|---|---|
| Ekadhikena Purvena | "By one more than the one before" | squaring numbers ending in 5 (n·(n+1) |
| Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah | "All from 9 and the last from 10" | multiplying/squaring near a base (100, 1000) |
| Urdhva-Tiryagbhyam | "Vertically and crosswise" | the cross method for general multiplication |
| Paravartya Yojayet | "Transpose and adjust" | division and rearranging equations |
The sutras are just memorable names — the maths underneath is the ordinary place-value arithmetic you've been doing.
