What does "epistemic" (epistemisch) mean, and where does the word come from?

Concerning knowledge and its conditions — from the Ancient Greek epistēmē (knowledge, cognition).

"Epistemic" is the adjective for everything to do with knowledge and the conditions under which it is possible. It comes from Ancient Greek epistēmē = knowledge/cognition (the same root gives us epistemology, the theory of knowledge). The epistemic questions are:

  • What are the preconditions for knowledge (Erkenntnis)?
  • How does knowledge — and belief more generally — actually come about?
  • What constitutes certainty (Gewissheit) and justification (Rechtfertigung), and what kind of doubt can legitimately be raised against what kind of belief?

So "epistemic virtues", "epistemic practice", "epistemic justice" all share this anchor: they're about the pursuit and grounding of knowledge, not about ethics or aesthetics.
