What does the maze metaphor illustrate about traditional logic vs. lateral thinking?
Traditional logic solves the maze; lateral thinking questions whether you need to be in the maze at all.
Traditional/Vertical thinking approach:
- Enter the maze
- Try paths systematically
- Backtrack when hitting dead ends
- Eventually find the exit through logical elimination
- Makes assumptions about what the rules are
Lateral thinking approach:
- Step back and look at the maze from above
- Climb over the walls
- Disregard "implied" rules that were never actually stated
- Find the exit by redefining the problem, not by solving it as presented
Why this matters:
- In cybersecurity, attackers are the lateral thinkers — they don't follow the "intended path" through a system
- Defenders who only think inside the maze (conventional security controls) miss creative attack vectors
- The best security professionals can switch between both modes: systematic analysis AND creative problem-solving
