What is the difference between Authentication and Authorization?

Authentication proves WHO you are; authorization decides WHAT you're allowed to do — and authentication always comes first.

Concept Definition Question Answered
Authentication Verifying identity "Who you are"
Authorization Granting permissions "What you can do"

Memory aid:

  • Authentication = identity ("who?")
  • Authorization = access ("what are you allowed to do?")

Important: Authentication must happen BEFORE authorization. You can't determine what someone can do until you know who they are.
