What is the difference between Authentication and Authorization?
Authentication proves WHO you are; authorization decides WHAT you're allowed to do — and authentication always comes first.
| Concept | Definition | Question Answered |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication | Verifying identity | "Who you are" |
| Authorization | Granting permissions | "What you can do" |
Memory aid:
- Authentication = identity ("who?")
- Authorization = access ("what are you allowed to do?")
Important: Authentication must happen BEFORE authorization. You can't determine what someone can do until you know who they are.
