What is the difference between privacy and seclusion?

Privacy is about controlling who accesses your information. Seclusion is about physically isolating yourself from others.

The word "privacy" comes from the Latin "privatus", meaning "apart from public life." But privacy is not the same as seclusion.

Privacy is the right to:

  • Confidentiality of personal data.
  • Private communication, like letters and phone calls.
  • Protect personal spaces, like your home, from intrusion.

Seclusion is physical separation and isolation from other people. Think of a cabin in the mountains with no neighbors.

The crucial distinction: you can have privacy in the middle of a busy city, because privacy is about control over information, not about being alone. A person at a crowded cafe can have privacy if nobody reads their messages. A hermit in the woods has no privacy if a drone is watching them.

This matters because digital privacy has nothing to do with physical isolation. It's entirely about who can access, process, and share your data.
