What is the "focused vs diffuse mode" idea, and how solid is it?
The claim (popularised by Barbara Oakley) that the brain has a concentrated "focused" mode for deliberate work and a relaxed "diffuse" mode where connections form on their own.
The intuition: when you're stuck, stepping back — a walk, a shower, sleep — lets the mind wander across ideas and stitch together links that effortful focus couldn't force. Many people recognise the experience of a solution "arriving" during a break.
Treat this as a useful metaphor rather than a precisely proven neuroscience of two switchable modes. The underlying phenomena it points at — incubation effects, mind-wandering aiding creativity, and memory consolidation during rest — are real and researched. The tidy two-mode packaging is a teaching simplification, not a hard finding.
