What is the SOCMINT research cycle, and what goes into the planning phase?
The SOCMINT research cycle has four phases — Planning, Research, Analysis, and Conclusion — and the planning phase requires defining your information needs, research depth, and sources.
* The SOCMINT research cycle — iterating as findings refine the question. *
The four phases:
- Planning (Planung) — Define what you need to know before you start looking
- Research (Recherche) — Execute the search using tools and techniques
- Analysis (Analyse) — Evaluate and interpret collected data
- Conclusion (Schlussfolgerung) — Draw findings together into actionable intelligence
Planning phase inputs:
- Information needs (Informationsbedarf) — What specific question are you trying to answer? A vague question leads to vague results.
- Depth of research (Grad der Recherche) — How deep do you need to go? A quick check vs. a comprehensive investigation require different approaches.
- Sources (Quellen) — Which platforms and data sources are relevant? Not every investigation requires every platform.
The cycle is iterative — findings from the analysis phase often send you back to research with refined questions. Good planning prevents wasted effort and helps maintain proportionality (one of Omand's ethical principles).
