What is the Zufallstechnik (Random Technique) and how does it stimulate creativity?

Use random, unrelated stimuli (words, images, objects) to force new associations and break out of thinking patterns.

How it works:

  1. Define your problem clearly
  2. Introduce a random element — open a dictionary/lexicon to a random page, pick a random image from a department store catalog, grab a random object
  3. Force connections between the random element and your problem
  4. The unexpected associations trigger new ideas that wouldn't emerge from direct analysis

Example:

  • Problem: "How to improve our incident response process?"
  • Random word: "Restaurant"
  • Forced associations:
    • Restaurants have a kitchen (preparation) → pre-stage response playbooks
    • Restaurants have a menu (options) → create a menu of response actions
    • Restaurants have a reservation system → schedule regular response drills
    • Restaurants handle rush hours → plan for incident surges

Why it works:

  • Your brain naturally resists making "wrong" or "irrelevant" connections
  • Random inputs force your brain out of its default patterns
  • Even if 90% of forced associations are useless, the 10% that aren't can be breakthrough ideas
  • Directly implements de Bono's 4th principle: deliberately introduce randomness
