Which success factors apply to creating awareness training content?
Tailor to the audience, transport key messages through multiple channels, apply PMT (real threat + easy coping), keep it entertaining and current — and less is more.
The content checklist:
- Audience fit: content aligned with the target group's needs
- Multiple media and channels: Merkblatt, video, poster, mail signature, game, podcast … — repetition across channels beats one big event
- Apply the Theorie der Schutzmotivation: make the threat real and simplify the coping — both sides, always
- Tone: unterhaltend, positiv, lustig, aktuell — entertaining, positive, funny, current. Fear-only content triggers denial; humor and relevance get watched and shared
- Weniger ist mehr: few clear messages stick; ten parallel topics produce security fatigue
And pragmatically: you don't have to produce everything yourself — existing content providers offer material (videos, phishing simulations, e-learnings) you can integrate into your own program.
Tip: "Positiv" is evidence-based, not soft: PMT shows fear without self-efficacy backfires — celebrate reported phishing attempts rather than shaming clickers.
